The Making of a Gate

Metal cut for handforged gate     Bar being heated before being punched in base of gate   Punched bars in handforged gate   Tenoned bars in handforged gate

The Hand forged Gates that I Make all start off from a scale drawing, that are drawn out in chalk on a large board at full size.

The Steel is then cut to length before having some life put into it by the fire. The holes that you see in the steel above are all punched using a hand chisel and hammer. The Tenons that go into the holes are formed on the Anvil with a Set hammer and hand hammer.

As the pieces are formed the beautiful hand forged gate gradually takes shape over the full scale drawing, until eventually the steel Tenons are riveted over in a shower of sparks and any fine adjustments that need doing are done. The gate is then given a zinc oxide coat of paint before being finished in the desired colour paint that my client stipulate.
